Slade Careers Programme
The Slade holds five career advice sessions for final year students which are open to all year groups and specifically tailored for Slade students’ needs.
Year 1 students also have a session tailored to them about how to find relevant part-time work alongside their studies such as artist assistants, gallery invigilators and art technicians. This session also covers how to use artistic skills in the wider workplace.
UCL Careers Extra
UCL Careers Extra is a programme of additional activities and support for UK (home fee status) undergraduate students from the following groups who are currently studying at UCL:
- Neither parent went to university and you went to a UK state school
- Care-leaver
- Carer
- Disabled
- Household income below £25,000 (as declared to Student Finance England)
- Black African, Black Caribbean or mixed Black African/White or Black Caribbean/White
Students who sign up to UCL Careers Extra will be added to a circulation list for targeted employer events and programmes.
You can also apply for bursaries to help cover the cost of undertaking internships and can access preferential booking for some UCL Careers events, longer careers appointments and extra careers events that are exclusive to UCL Careers Extra students.
What does UCL Careers offer?
This is available to all undergraduates enrolled on a UCL course.
One to one appointments:
- Short 20-minute guidance sessions
- CV and application checking
- Practice interviews
- 30 min appointments for SLASH students (including Slade) for those in the ‘Decide’ (e.g. ‘I don’t know what to do’) or ‘Plan’ (e.g. ‘I know what I want to do, but need help getting there’) stages of their career thinking. These are currently focused towards finalists.
Careers essential workshops and online learning in topics such as:
- Career decision-making
- Effective networking
- Writing successful applications
- Interview success

Finance
Fees (2021-2022)
UCL’s tuition fees are set annually and cover registration, tuition and supervision for each academic year, or part of an academic year that you are enrolled. The fee does not cover artists’ or other academic materials.

- UCL have some schemes to help students who are facing financial difficulties. They also provide advice and information to help you get a grip on your money issues.
- Emergency loans
https://www.ucl.ac.uk/students/funding/financial-support/emergency-loans - Limited cash loans of up to £250 are available to students who have experienced a delay in their normal funding being paid.
- UCL Financial Assistance Fund https://www.ucl.ac.uk/students/funding/financial-support/financial-assistance-fund
- The Financial Assistance Fund is a hardship fund for UCL students who are in unexpected financial need.
- Student Funding Adviser https://www.ucl.ac.uk/students/funding/financial-support/welfare-adviser
The Student Funding Advisers offer support, advice and guidance to students who are struggling with money management or experiencing complex funding issues.

What can I get from Slade?
SCHOLARSHIPS
Slade Scholarships are awarded by nomination following the entrance exams and interviews. In total, the Slade offers seven Scholarships.
- The Euan Uglow Memorial Scholarship £2,000
- The Grocers’ Company Queen’s Golden Jubilee Scholarship UK nationals, £2,000 per year
- The Herbert Seaborn Memorial Scholarship £1,000
- The James Lewis Foundation Scholarship UK national £4,500 per year
- The Nancy Balfour Trust Scholarship £2,500
- The Painters’ Company Scholarship normally UK nationals, specialising £5,000 per year.
- The Thomas Scholarship £5,000

BURSARIES
Each year the Slade Bursary Committee awards a number of £500 Bursaries to students with particularly difficult financial circumstances. All students are eligible to apply.
PRIZES
There are a number of prizes awarded by nomination annually to graduating students.
- The Boise Travel Scholarship, usually worth between £4,000 and £9,000.
- The Dolbey Travel Scholarship for up to a maximum of £3,000
- The Berenice Goodwin Prize £500
- The Clare Winsten Memorial Award One or two awards of £10,000 are available each year.
- The Julian Sullivan Award £500
- The Kenneth Armitage Sculpture Prize £1,000
- The Michael Farrell Memorial Prize £600
- The William Coldstream Prize £1,000
- A number of small Sessional Prizes are awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Slade Professor. They include the Alfred W Rich Scholarship; the Henry Tonks Prize, the Prankerd-Jones Memorial Prize; the Slade Prize and the Steer Medal and Prize.

Government LOAN & GRANT
You can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan and Maintenance Loan
Tuition Fee Loan
Your university or college sets your tuition fee, and the loan is paid directly to them. You have to pay it back.
Maintenance Loan for living costs
You may have to give details of your household income.
The loan is paid directly into your bank account at the start of each term. You have to pay the loan back.
Students on a low income
You can apply for:

You can apply for:
- Childcare Grant – full-time students only

Disabled students
If you have a disability, long-term health condition, mental health condition or specific learning difficulty (such as dyslexia) you can apply for:
- Disabled Students’ Allowances
- Extra help if you’re experiencing financial hardship
